Etching Electronics Circuits

Etching is the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design. Printed Circuit Board (PCB) are one the most seen objects in daily life. For engineers like us, specially electronics, it is our life part. And etching can a very powerful tool for us to design and create our own homemade circuit boards.

The steps to make a PCB through etching are listed and explained below:

* First of all, you need to have a design how your circuit board looks like as you can design it on EAGLE and test on breadboard.

* Then you should print that circuit through a printer, laser printer or any thing else.

* Then you place your printed design face down on board in which you will print that circuit and iron it really well until you can see the circuit design on the board.

* After you iron, plunge it into cold water and remove the paper.

* After the paper is removed, it is dipped in FeCl3 solution and for about and hour. You can increase the concentration of FeCl3 if the copper is not removed. Wear gloves as it is a skin irritant.

* Now remove the protected part using acetone and you will get your desired design as shown in picture above.

here is a short video on etching. he uses light but we can also used iron to print. it works fine!!
